Art Studio: This course is Art 2 according to the Missouri State Standards (according to DESE). Within this course students will begin to dig deeper and look further into their own artistic creativity, and aesthetic. Students that have successfully completed Art Foundations will be allowed to enter Studio, this course will have more rigorous projects compared to Foundations. Students will be expected to critique art, give presentations on their projects, research past movements and artists.
Movements covered within this course: Expressionism, Impressionism, Modernism, Abstraction, 3D design, portraiture covered through Chuck Close, Picasso and Cubism, Ceiling tile installation inspired by Georgia O'keeffe, graphic design, printmaking, studying still life, nature landscapes by covering a 4 seasonal study (learning how color sets a mood), Francis Bacon, guest speakers include local professional artists, CAL (Columbia Art League), MU undergraduate and graduate guests, field trips to local Universities, portfolio development, and sequential art.

Week 1: 8/19-8/22: Intro to Studio, Rules, Expectations, projects introduced, CAL participation
Art Covered: Large Paper, tissues, construction, and mixed media flowers 1st project: worth 100 pts.
Intro to Project 2: Printmaking and logo design for DHS new restaurant cafe (gift card reward to winner), worth 100 pts.

9/2-9/5: Students will begin to explore the realm of American painter Georgia O'keeffe. Miss O'keeffe was famous for her illustrious paintings and close up cropping. Students will work on ceiling tiles in the first floor hallway of the high school.
Project: Students are to create their own cropped flower, or a recreation of Miss Georgia O'keeffe
Project will be due on Friday September 12th, 100 points possible.

10/6-10/10: Students should be continuing their work on ceiling tiles and staying Georgia O'keeffe as we near the end of the first quarter. Possible Midterm review pending for students studying.
10/13-10/18: Columbia Art League is creating a mask making unit with the students in preparation for Halloween, we will be casting face masks out of plaster molding.
10/14: Students were able to watch a great demonstration of local artist Kara Brooks who is an amazing Glitter artist, for ideas in decorating their masks.
10/20-10/24: Mask detailing and sculptural design on plaster masks for Halloween.
10/27-10/31: Walking Dead Unit on Zombie art, artist covered Francis Bacon
11/3-11/7: Students will be transitioning into research for Tattoo and Album art for their Printmaking unit with Columbia Art League and MU.
11/11-11/14: This is a four day school week, no school on Friday, November, 14th. Students will be working on Printmaking Unit. Students will be working with CAL art instructor Karen Stout and MU professor Sharyn Hyatt, with a
guest artist (Tattoo artist, on Wednesday, November 12th.)
11/17-11/21: Students continue to carve their block prints and begin to make multiple prints for their printmaking blocks
11/24-11/25: Happy Thanksgiving: we will be decorating the gym for our annual Thanksgiving celebration luncheon.

12/8-12/12: Final Project: "Tell a story" students choose their media and complete a visual story, Student art show on Friday, December 12th, 4-6 PM.

Welcome Back: 2nd Semester
1/5-1/9: Introduction to the class, rules and expectations. Element being learned: Color. Students will be deciding upon an independent study of their own research. If they cannot come up with one they will be working on a plaster sculpture resembling something abstract from the artist Jean Dubuffet.
1/12-1/16: Students worked on finalizing their first projects that were due on Friday, January 16th, 100pts.
1/20-1/24: Project 2 intro watercolor paints of Pablo Picasso, superheroes.
1/26-1/30: Students will be working in their second projects: Pablo Picasso Super Heroes in watercolor paints.
2/3-2/6: Fun day on Thursday for Mr. Dresden's Birthday. Finish up Picasso's for Mid quarter grades.
2/9-2/12: NO school on Friday for Teacher work collaboration days. Happy Black History month and students will be
making African Tribal Ceremonial Masks out of plaster.
2/17-2/20: Students will be completing their plaster masks with adding mixed media and more paint designs to their already beautiful masks. Art pictures for the first three projects are coming soon.
2/23-2/26: Students will be learning the elements of Shape and Form through self portraits in pastels. They will complete practice hours and then begin a final project that showcases their image with imagined color.
3/2-3/6: Elements of Shape and Form, learning the principle of Contrast: Portraits continued

Announcements: Attention all art students interested in going to visit a local University specifically for Art, or Art Education, graphic design, theatre, or communications, please see Mr. Dresden for sign up. He will be taking Juniors and Seniors interested in visiting William Woods University for a college visit day. William Woods is located in Fulton, MO about 18 miles south east of Columbia. Students must sign up and be eligible through grade level, and participation points through first quarter. Field trip will be Wednesday, November, 19th."Reflected Perspectives" December 12th, from 4-6 PM, we will be celebrating with the community on the student art show.
Second Semester: Students have been asked to participate in an art competition for sidewalk chalk on April 10th at the Columbia Art League, and to start submitting to local high school art shows.
