This is considered Art 1 for Missouri State Standards. Students will learn the Art Elements and Art Principles within this course. Now because Douglass is a semester based curriculum and not a year's worth like other secondary educational facilities, students will be allowed to advance beyond just the Elements and explore the Principles, and study more art vocabulary then they may get other places.
Elements of Art: color, shape, line, form, space, texture
Principles of Art: movement, unity, balance, pattern, contrast, rhythm, emphasis
Art Vocabulary within course: primary color, secondary color, monochromatic, tint, shade
Artists and movements covered in class: Vincent Vangogh, Pablo Picasso, Georgia O'keeffe, Francis Bacon, Piet Mondrian, modern artists in different experimental movements, sequential art (comic books), Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, Modern Abstraction (Jackson Pollock), ceramics, sculpture, modern sculpture emulated after Jean Dubuffet, wheel throwing, and even tribal tattoo practices.
The course is designed to have notes, students will warm up with sketch book assignments, and then have just under an hour to work on their studio projects/assignments. Students will then have 8-10 minutes to work on cleaning the room and free to ask questions or look at other work they may have missed.
